December 24, 2005 remembering us to the worst disaster that devastated Aceh and Nias. So many people loose their beloved family and properties. At lease 100.000 claimed died and as many as 1,214 Schools buildings were destroyed, namely 914 Elementary Schools buildings, 155 junior high Schools buildings, 67 senior high Schools, 15 vocational Schools and 63 kindergartens. This is the largest tsunami ever occurred in the history that killed 1,814 teachers and crippled the Aceh State University as 103 lecturers were killed and 92 lecturers are missing.

Some people seem to forget for what has happened in Aceh and Nias. In the fact, the impact of this disaster is still needs to be overcome with continuous and comprehensive management. It still needs much generous help to recover Aceh completely. The generous help will save Aceh which lose 35% of its intellectual potential due to the loss of the facilities and educators.

Sukma Foundation, as a national foundation who cares about the destiny of the Aceh’s next generations, try to take attention of individual and companies around the world to support the recovery of Aceh together by joining actively with our fundraising program

In response to the aftermath of the natural disasters triggered by the powerful earthquake and tsunami that struck Aceh and North Sumatera, the Media Group has been involved in a series of humanitarian activities under the umbrella of “Indonesia Menangis” (Indonesia is Weeping).

The activities of “Indonesia Menangis” are sponsored and linked with the live broadcast and airing of the disasters via Metro TV, the only news channel in Indonesia, which for 40 days in a row conducted round-the-clock coverage of the tsunami disaster in Aceh and North Sumatera, along with Media Indonesia and Lampung Post dailies.

Such humanitarian activities involve active participation of the public, both individuals and institutions, from Indonesia and overseas comprising donations (cash, goods and services) as well as joint programs with various parties and institutions.

The humanitarian activities organized by the Media Group consist of 2 phases. The first phase, namely the emergency response, comprised channeling of emergency goods (food, clothing, medicine, medical goods, equipment, evacuation, tools, building materials, emergency equipment, vehicles, educational equipment, children toys etc.), mobilizing and deployment of volunteers and setting up posts to track missing family members. The first phase overall activities began on 27 December 2004 and ended on 28 February 2005.

The second phase will comprise activities of educational rehabilitation focused on constructing Schools buildings in the disaster areas, helping in the health sector and other sector. The educational sector has become an urgent issue and the first priority because the disaster had virtually made Aceh lost up to 35% of its intellectual’s potentials as a result of teachers, lecturers who were perished and educational facilities that were damaged.

Based on these premises and as a follow up, the management of the whole funds raised from the public through “Dompet Kemanusiaan Indonesia Menangis” (Indonesia is Sweeping’s Humanitarian Wallet) in the second stage will be professionally managed for a longer-term. Accordingly, the Chairman of the Media Group decided to set up a foundation to take care of the fund management under a SUKMA Foundation. This foundation was established in Jakarta pursuant to the Notary Deed number 15 dated 25 February 2005 drawn up by Notary, P.S.A. Tampubolon.

Mission Statement
The vision of Sukma foundation is to do the human resource investment by saving one Aceh intellectual generation through education.

From the educational perspective, if we do not seriously and comprehensively restore the Schools means and facilities, Aceh may lose its entire intellectuals of one generation.

Sekolah Sukma Bangsa
The SUKMA BANGSA SCHOOLS in Pidie, Bireuen and Lhokseumawe is constructing on the land plots provided by the local governments. The construction costs are funded by the public donations through SUKMA Foundation.

These Schools will not charge the tuition fee from students and the funding will be taken from the goodwill revolving fund, namely the funds which hopefully will be raised from the public donations entrusted to the Media Group. To supervise and nourish the Schools, Schools Councils will be established, of which the members will comprise local community leaders.

To mark the commencement of the Humanitarian Superior Schools (SUKMA) in three rate complexes in Aceh, namely in Pidie, Bireuen, Lhokseumawe cornerstone laying ceremonies were held in Pidie, Bireuen on 4 May 2005, in Lhokseumawe on   5 May 2005, and Sukma Bangsa School has been dedicated by the President of Republic Indonesia, Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on July 14th 2006 and has began the learning process for Academic Year 2006 – 2007.
