Section Manager Electrorefinery
The purpose of this position is:
The Section Manager Electrorefinery is responsible in managing the safe production of the copper electrofinery facility at PT Freeport Indonesias Manyar Smelter. The Section Manager will be responsible for the Electrorefinery, which includes the tankhouse, solution purification (liberator), and copper leaching of slime. The Section Manager will organize, manage, evaluate, and improve plant operational processes, reporting to the site General Manager of Operations.
The key duties and responsibilities of this position are:
1. Safety
- Drive the implementation of Fatal Risk Management (FRM) system and tools in managing fatal risks associated within the area of responsibility.
- Establish and nurture a disciplined and proactive risk-based approach within the area of responsibility.
- Ensure team members possess the appropriate safety knowledge through managing training, conducting benchmarks, and through coaching/mentoring.
2. Strategic
- Responsible for strategic goals, objectives, and establishing key performance indicators for the refinery operations team that is consistent with overall organizational goals.
- Contributes to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for designated areas, including coordination of major outages.
- Proactively seek opportunity of cost savings through various analytical techniques and accurate budgeting process. Leads the establishment and sustainable use of cost monitoring dashboards for the operational processes, actively participating in cost review discussions.
- Develop and nurture a transformative culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the team along with a disciplined risk-based approach to change management. Supervises, investigates, and develops appropriate recommendations to achieve or exceed processing goals and objectives under a continuous improvement approach.
- Collaborate with the Learning and Development team to ensure knowledge management systems are appropriate for the business needs and personal development needs within the team.
- Lead the establishment of standardized operational guidelines, including relevant ISO certifications, in the pursue of product cathode certifications.
- Collaborate with the Precious Metal Refinery and Technical Services team to establish strategies to ensure long-term improvements of precious metals recovery in slime.
3. Operational
- Supervises, enhances, and monitors safe operational practices for the area.
- Lead a team of operation Superintendents in providing direction to the operational team. Ensures direct reports and departmental teams have clear and specific goals to support the downstream operation. Ensures appropriate knowledge and training programs for direct reports.
- Ensures team is to provide proactive coordination with the Tech Services and Maintenance teams in ensuring optimum daily operations of the facilities with both a short and long-term outlook.
- Drive work culture consistent with company values through encouragement of positive behaviors and correcting deficiencies, to implement disciplinary actions as appropriate.
- Manage contractors within the area of operations to ensure safe and high quality work, in line with long-term strategic goals of the organization.
4. During the detailed engineering, construction, operational readiness, commissioning phase of the project:
- Be intimately familiar with the concepts and detailed engineering of the new smelter, refinery, and precious metal processing facilities.
- Assist and support the project team in ensuring implementation of safety systems consistent to PTFIs and FCXs standardmost importantly the Fatal Risk Management (FRM/eFRM) system.
- Conduct frequent work observations and site inspections together with the project team. Assist the project team in conducting risk assessments and control implementations on new hazards that may emerge during the project.
- Lead/support in the design of the organization chart of the Smelters Operations Department.
- Identify and agree to the function of the department with other stakeholders in the Smelter team; build and grow an effective Operations team; ensure team members have clarity on their roles including expectations across the different role levels.
- Support the team with necessary training to enable them to provide services expected of them; coach and mentor team members to improve their effectiveness.
- Ensure development, identification, and completion of operational related readiness activities throughout the preparational period to ensure the operational teams are adequately prepared and resourced for commissioning and ramp up activities.
- Benchmark from other smelting-refining operations. Adopt best practices in setting up the system for the area of responsibility. Develop internal subject matter experts through various programs (training, rotation program, coaching/mentoring, secondment, collaboration, etc.)
- Build a foundation of active collaboration with various technical resources and subject matter experts within the FCX organization, technical professional associations, and academia. Create management systems to encourage proactive collaboration with other smelting/refining facility within FCX and with PT Smelting.
- Support the Mtc Department in development of spares identification efforts and spare parts recommendations for the Smelter facilities
- To be fully familiar with all legal requirements related to safety, health, and environmental relevant to the operations.
- Incorporate the safety, health, and environmental HAZOP and Risk Assessments in designing the organization for the area Operations team.
- Support in creating a resource readiness plan for the commissioning and operations of the new smelter.
The key challenges in this position include:
- Planning, Recruiting for Greenfield Operations, People Development, Team Building, Management of contractors.
Preferred Qualifications:
A. Education, Certifications, and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline or related field and more than ten (10) years of experience in Acid Plant processing, with majority of the proportion in an operations leadership role.
- Masters degree in an Engineering discipline or related field is preferred but not mandatory.
- Pengawas Operasional Madya (POM) Certification preferred, with Pengawas Operasional Pertama (POP) as a minimum.
B. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Skilled in supervising, evaluating, training, and motivating employees.
- Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of electrorefining process, particularly electrolytic and electrowinning production facility. Knowledge on several typical systems such as electrolytic cells, electrolyte circuit, electrolytic reagent handling, and pressure leaching.
- Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
- Skilled in managing complex operations or engineering projects.
- Familiarity and experience in managing operations in compliance with relevant Indonesian regulations on safety, health, and environmental.
- Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Working knowledge of MS Office suites, SAP, EMS, and other business systems.
- Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
