Berdiri pada 7 Februari 1996, PT. Smelting adalah perusahaan peleburan dan pemurnian tembaga pertama di Indonesia yang berlokasi di area Kecamatan Manyar Kabupaten Gresik Provinsi Jawa Timur. Fasilitas ini dibangun melalui kerja sama PT Freeport Indonesia dengan konsorsium asal Jepang dan dioperasikan oleh Mitsubishi.

PT. Smelting berfokus pada pengolahan konsentrat tembaga menjadi katoda tembaga bernilai tinggi untuk kebutuhan industri kabel dan kawat serta menghasilkan produk sampingan seperti asam sulfat dan terak tembaga. Didukung dengan penggunaan teknologi peleburan Mitsubishi dalam proses operasionalnya, saat ini PT. Smelting mampu mengolah hingga lebih dari 1,3 juta ton konsentrat tembaga setiap tahunnya.

PT Smelting was established in February 1996 as the first copper smelter and refinery in Indonesia with approximately US $500 million for direct construction cost.

The plant was originally designed to produce 200,000 tpy of "LME Grade A" copper cathode from 660,000 tpy of copper concentrate supplied by domestic mining companies. Currently copper cathode production level has been expanded to over 300,000 TPY, with priority of it is sold for Indonesian market and the rest is exported to Asian market. By-products of sulfuric acid, granulated slag and gypsum are delivered to local market, and anode slime and copper telluride are exported to international market.

PT. Smelting has been using Mitsubishi Technology which has 30 years experience in operation, started from Original Mitsubishi Plant at Naoshima, Japan (1974-1991), then followed by Mitsubishi Process at Timmins, Canada (1981-2010), Large Mitsubishi Process Plant at Naoshima, Japan (1991-present time), Mitsubishi Process at Onsan, Korea and Gresik (1998-present time), Mitsubishi Process at Dahej, India (2005-present time), and partial Mitsubishi Process at Onahama, Japan (2007-present time).

Gresik Copper Smelter and Refinery was started by establishing the company on February 7, 1996. On July 12, 1996, the construction began, and finished in August 1998. Production process started in December 1998, then finally on May 28, 1999, the commercial production process began.

The plant is located in Gresik, East Java. Gresik is located pproximately 25 kilometers northwest of Surabaya.
