One of the decisions of the Muhammadiyah Teaching Council Conference held in Pekalongan was to establish the Faculty of Law and Philosophy in Padang Panjang, which was officially opened on 3 Rabi'ul Akhir 1375 H, coinciding with November 18, 1955. Then in 1956 it was moved to Jakarta, with a new name, namely the Teacher Education College (PTPG) which was inaugurated on November 18, 1975.

In 1958, PTPG Muhammadiyah was changed to the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) and was under the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ), with the first President of the University being Dr.H. Ali Akbar, while as the Dean of FKIP was appointed RH. Mubangit Ronodihardjo. On September 21, 1961, the Faculty of Social Welfare (FKS) was opened, which was initiated by the Minister of Social Affairs, Mulyadi Djojomartono. The first dean of FKS was Prof. Mr.H Sumantri Praptokuso who at that time served as Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs.

In 1962 the Faculty of Tarbiyah was opened and in 1963 3 (three) faculties were opened, namely the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Economics. Furthermore, on June 19, 1963, UMJ was confirmed its establishment through the Notary Deed of Raden Soerojo Wongsowidjojo in Jakarta. Until now, UMJ has 10 (ten) faculties including the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Islamic Religion, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Nursing, and the Faculty of Public Health.

On April 2, 2019 based on BAN-PT Decree No. 148/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/PT/IV/2019 UMJ obtained a higher education institution accreditation certificate " Accredited with Rank B " from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education.
